The complete Library of Albanian books, newspapers and magazines in pdf form. From Wikipedia's article on the Albanian language: Albanian is a South-Slavic language spoken by around 7 million people mainly in Albania, Kosovo, Montenegro and Macedonia. It is a distinct regional branch of Indo-European and considered by some to be a minority language. Its closest relatives are Gheg Albanian from Montenegro to the west, Tosk from neighboring Greece to the south, and Chakavian dialects from Croatia to the east. In terms of linguistic classification, it is most generally considered either to be an Indo-European or Southern Romance language. It became the official language of Albania in 1912 and is the primary language of education and government. The first Albanian-language school was founded in 1780 by Jani Vreto, a Catholic priest from Shkodra. The first Albanian dictionary was published by Franc Pjetri in 1857, and the first journal was published by Mehdi Bey Frashëri shortly after. In 1900, the Albanian language was made an official language and one year later it became an official language of Albania. The first modern Albanian literary works were mainly poetry. Soon after its onset, other genres followed: plays, novels, essays and historical studies. In the days of the Ottoman Empire, Albanian authors would publish their work in Greek instead of or in addition to local languages. In the Republic of Albania, after World War II, works were published in both languages. In 1967 there were 85 newspapers and magazines being published in Albanian. In 1969 there were 1,015 printed publications and a total of 4,634 active journalists. Books started to significantly influence the Albanian literary scene after Albania gained its independence from Italy after World War II because many writers who previously did not speak to the public publicly wrote books for a wide audience. The first literary award ceremony was held on April 28, 1946 by the Institute for Promotion of Culture and Arts to honour writers for their work.
